Garlic Bread

Makes: 8-10 knots
Time: 1 hour 30 minutes

Ingredients

For the Dough:

  • 220g warm water

  • 1 tsp dried yeast

  • 300g plain flour

  • 1 tsp sugar

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 1 tbsp oil

For the Garlic Butter:

  • 8 cloves garlic, peeled

  • 1 tbsp oil

  • 50g soft butter

  • Enough water to cover the garlic

Method

  1. In a small bowl, combine the warm water and yeast. Let it sit for 5 minutes until frothy.

  2. In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, salt, and oil. Add the yeast mixture and mix to form a dough.

  3. Knead for a few minutes until a smooth dough forms. Cover and let it rest for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

  4. While the dough rises, make the garlic butter. Place the peeled garlic cloves, 1 tbsp oil, and enough water to cover in a small pot. Simmer until the garlic is soft. Remove the cloves and mash them into the soft butter.

  5. Roll the dough out into a rectangle. Spread the garlic butter over the surface.

  6. Cut the rectangle into strips about 4cm wide. Roll each strip into a little log or twist into a knot.

  7. Place the knots on a lined baking tray and proof for another 30 minutes.

  8. Preheat oven to 200°C. Bake for 14 minutes, until golden brown.
